100 μm and 160 μm emission as resolved star-formation rate estimators in M 33 (HERM33ES) *

Context. Over the past few years several studies have provided estimates of the SFR (star-formation rate) or the total infrared luminosity from just one infrared band. However these relations are generally derived for entire galaxies, which are known to contain a large scale diffuse emission that is not necessarily related to the latest star-formation episode. Aims. We provide new relations to ...

An accurate measurement of the anisotropies and mean level of the cosmic infrared background at 100 μm and 160 μm

Context. The measurement of the anisotropies in the cosmic infrared background (CIB) is a powerful means of studying the evolution of galaxies and large-scale structures. These anisotropies have been measured by a number of experiments, from the far-infrared (AKARI 90 μm) to the millimeter (Planck and the South Pole Telescope at ∼2 mm). One of the main impediments to an accurate measurement on ...

Efficient Star Formation in M 33

The Star Formation (SF) rate in galaxies is an important parameter at all redshifts and evolutionary stages of galaxies. In order to understand the increased SF rates in intermediate redshift galaxies one possibility is to study star formation in local galaxies with properties frequently found at this earlier epoch like low metallicity and small size. We present sensitive observations of the mo...

The relations among 8, 24 and 160 μm dust emission within nearby spiral galaxies

We investigate the relations among the stellar continuum-subtracted 8 μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH 8 μm) emission, 24 μm hot dust emission and 160 μm cold dust emission in 15 nearby face-on spiral galaxies in the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey sample. The relation between PAH 8 and 24 μm emission measured in ∼2 kpc regions is found to exhibit a significant amount of scatter,...

[CII] at 158 μm as a star formation tracer in late-type galaxies

We present a calibration of the massive star formation rate vs. [CII] luminosity relation based on a sample of nearby, late-type galaxies observed with ISO-LWS and imaged in the Hα+[NII] line. The relation holds for far-IR luminosities 10 ≤ LF IR ≤ 10 L⊙. The derived star formation rates have an uncertainty of about a factor of 10. Part of this uncertainty is due to the different mix of contrib...
